Undoubtedly, the strongest and most secure electronic identifier (eID) currently available is one based on a physical smart card or token with PKI technology, such as the Spanish digital ID card (DNIe). Other similar initiatives are underway, such as the ePassport (EAC/CVC) and the European Citizen Card (ECC), all of which use PKI technology. As a manufacturer of PKI products, it is important for Safelayer to continue researching in this direction and make advances on the technical and interoperability fronts as well as in terms of the legal issues, both in Europe and globally.
Of the security services that can be deployed on the eIDs and PKI technology, this section deals with authentication and electronic signatures (eSignature). Great efforts are being made to unify advanced eSignature formats (AdES) to promote interoperability while there are also initiatives underway to harmonize the European legal framework for the mutual recognition of signatures. In our opinion, there is still much work to be done in this area. Safelayer believes that semantic technologies can be of great use in some of the more difficult-to-resolve issues such as managing signature policies, the expression and valuation of trust, long-term signatures and archiving, the reconciliation of the ambiguities in the legal terms, and interoperability.
The articles for this section will be available soon.
